Iris Flower Varieties

Iris is a genus of more than 250 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. They are notable for their attractive flowers and appear all over the north temperate zone. The plants show up in diverse landscapes and climates all over North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Irises exist in riverbanks, meadowlands and montane areas. In some languages, irises are called as sword flags or flags, relating them to symbols of royalty and heraldry. The iris is the National Emblem of France.
Iris means "rainbow" in Greek. It was called "rainbow" due to the many colorful varieties of the flowers. Iris flowers come in a wide range of colors but cut irises are mostly blue, yellow and white like the summer sky. Irises are bulbous perennials and are native to southern Europe and the Meditteranean region. They are belongs to the iridaceae family and that also includes freesia. These flowers take their name from the Greek goddess of the rainbow and the fast messenger of the gods.
